What exactly is an MCP server?
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets AI assistants connect directly to external apps. Instead of exporting data or switching between tabs, your AI assistant reads from and acts on your Smartsupp account in real time through natural language. You ask a question, the AI queries Smartsupp, and brings back the answer.
What can I do with Smartsupp MCP?
The MCP server gives you 15 tools across three areas. With contacts, you can search for a customer by name, email, or phone and pull their full profile and conversation history. With conversations, you can search across your entire inbox, read individual messages, filter by status or topic, and send replies directly from your AI assistant. And for management, you can add or remove tags, check agent availability, and pull statistics without opening the Smartsupp dashboard.
In practice, that means asking things like: "Which conversations from this week haven't been replied to?", "Summarise the history of customer jan@company.com", or "Who on the team had the fastest response time last month?"
What plan do I need to start using Smartsupp MCP?
MCP requires API access, which is included in the Plus, Expert, and Ultimate plans. Free and Solo plans don't include API access. If you're not sure which plan you're on, check your account settings.
Which AI tools does Smartsupp MCP work with?
Currently tested and working with Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini. For Claude, you need a paid plan (Pro or Max). For ChatGPT, MCP requires the Plus plan or above with Developer Mode enabled. For Gemini, connect through the Gemini CLI using your Google account.
Can the AI make changes in my account?
Yes – but only within the permissions of your Smartsupp account. The MCP server can both read and write: it can search conversations and contacts, send replies, manage tags, and pull statistics. It cannot delete conversations, modify account settings, change billing, or do anything your user account isn't already allowed to do.
Is my data safe?
The MCP server authenticates using your Smartsupp credentials and can only access what your account can see, nothing more. Data travels through your AI assistant's infrastructure as part of the conversation context. Anthropic (Claude), OpenAI (ChatGPT), and Google (Gemini) all operate under strict data privacy standards. Do I need to know how to code?
No. Setup means getting your API key and following a short guide for your AI assistant – no coding required. After that, using MCP is just typing questions in Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini. No code, no configuration files, no ongoing maintenance.
How complex is the setup?
Already using Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini? Setup takes a few minutes. Grab your API key from your Smartsupp account settings and follow the setup guide for your tool – the steps vary slightly for each. That's it.
Can I try MCP during my free trial?
Yes, the free trial includes API access, so MCP works during the trial. After it ends, you'll need the Plus plan or above to keep using it.
