FAQs about Smartsupp webhooks

A webhook is a message Smartsupp sends to a URL of your choice whenever something happens in chat, for example when a chat closes or a visitor leaves their email. The REST API works the other way round: your system asks Smartsupp for data when it needs it. Webhooks are the right fit when you want to react right away, the API when you pull data on your own schedule. Many teams use both, a webhook to learn that a chat has closed and the API to fetch what they need about it.
Webhooks are included in the 14-day free trial, so you can build and test your scenario before you commit. After the trial, you'll need the Plus plan or higher: 1 webhook on Plus, 3 on Expert and a custom limit on Ultimate. The Free and Solo plans don't include them. The full breakdown is on the pricing page.
It depends on where you send the events. With an automation tool that can receive webhooks, you don't write any code. You add a webhook trigger in the tool, paste its URL into Smartsupp, pick the events and send a test, so the tool learns the structure of the data. From there, you map the fields to your CRM, Slack or spreadsheet, just like in any other automation. Our step-by-step guide shows the whole setup on two popular tools. To receive events on your own server, you'll need a developer. Your endpoint has to accept the request, respond with a 2xx status quickly and ideally verify the signature.
You can choose from 24 events in three groups. Conversation events cover when a chat opens or closes, gets rated, is assigned to an operator, or when the customer, an operator or a bot replies. Contact events cover when a contact is created or updated, or when a visitor leaves their email or phone in chat. Visitor events cover when someone arrives on your site, leaves it or starts typing. Each webhook sends only the events you pick, so your scenario gets exactly what it needs. See the full list of events in our Help Center.
Open Settings → Webhooks in your dashboard, add your endpoint URL, pick the events and save. Then click Send test. Smartsupp sends a sample event to your URL, so you can check it arrives and your automation tool can read the data structure before you build the rest of your workflow. Details are in the setup guide.
If a delivery fails, Smartsupp retries it with increasing delays for up to 3 days. Every event carries a unique ID, so your system can skip it if the same event arrives twice. Endpoints that keep failing are disabled automatically, and you can switch them back on in Settings → Webhooks anytime. To avoid failed deliveries, respond quickly and do any heavy processing after you reply.
Smartsupp sends events only to the URLs you add yourself, and only the events you pick. Every request is signed according to the Standard Webhooks specification, so your server can verify the signature and reject anything that doesn't come from Smartsupp. Use an HTTPS endpoint and keep your signing secret on your server. Details on how Smartsupp stores and protects your data are in our data privacy and GDPR guide.
Not directly. A webhook tells you what happened in which conversation, not the whole conversation with all its messages. To get those, use the details from the event to fetch the conversation through the REST API. In an automation tool, that's one extra HTTP request after the webhook trigger. You'll need an API token, which is also included from the Plus plan.
